Boxcryptor review. How to add End-to-End encryption to cloud services

Cloud services have become part of our lives. It is convenient, fast and allows you to always have up-to-date information at your fingertips. One drawback is that not every service supports end-to-end encryption. But this is easy to fix.

Boxcryptor is a service that, when transferring data, allows you to add encryption to almost any cloud storage End-to-End.

The service is available on all major platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS. There is also a no-install version and an add-on for Microsoft Teams.

How to set up encryption in Boxcryptor

To work with Boxcryptor, you will need to create an account with the service. The password for the service must be stored as the apple of an eye, because it will not be possible to recover it. Boxcryptor uses the Zero Knowledge architecture, and simply technically cannot help with the recovery of any information.

After authorization, you need to add one or more cloud providers. It can be Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or any of the 30 services .

When choosing a provider, you will need to go through the authorization procedure already in his service. I added Dropbox, and then my folders from the cloud storage appeared in the Boxcryptor window.

Further work is already underway directly at Boxcryptor. You need to select a service, go to the desired folder and simply transfer the file to it. After that, you will be prompted to download the data without encryption or with encryption.

When you try to open such a folder in the standard system explorer, you will see only encrypted data.

You can decrypt the file through the Boxcryptor context menu.

For added security, Boxcryptor can be protected with a pin or password.

In a mobile application, work is structured in a similar way. Additionally, important files can be made available offline.

Tariffs

In the free version of Boxcryptor, you can connect one cloud service and synchronize data between two devices.

The paid version for home users costs $ 48 per year and removes all restrictions. And also adds encryption of file names.

As always, the extra layer of protection requires little sacrifice. So when working with Boxcryptor, you will have to change your approach to working with cloud services.

The data will have to be uploaded through a separate application that requires an Internet connection. Otherwise, the service really does its job, and if you were looking for an easy way to add encryption, then Boxcryptor can help you.
