Alt + Tab in any operating system is used for quick switching between open application windows. But that simple key combination can always be upgraded to perform more useful actions.

With [**AATWS**](https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/4412/advanced-alttab-window-switcher/) for the GNOME shell, the ordinary application switcher gains:

- **Search** – type to jump directly to a window.
- **Filters** – narrow the list by category, workspace, or other criteria.
- **Sorting** – arrange windows by most recent, title, size, etc.
- **Workspace/monitor navigation** – switch between virtual desktops or physical screens.

The app’s behavior can be modified in its settings, which I recommend reviewing immediately after installation.

There you can tweak almost any AATWS parameter, set animations, enable or disable features, and fine‑tune the experience to suit your workflow.
