I've been using Trello for a while, and it still works well for my needs. But if you're looking for an alternative that you can host on your own server and have full control over, today I'm going to tell you whether PLANKA is worth trying.

[**PLANKA**](https://planka.app/) is a Kanban-style online task management service that you can deploy on your server.

### Get started

When you first launch PLANKA, it is not exactly impressive, but perhaps such minimalism will be a plus for many. You will find a screen with the ability to create your first project for personal or team use.

Icons in the right corner allow you to control the mode of displaying and sorting cards. Nothing special. There is also a search by projects.

When creating a project, you can specify its name and description. But when creating a new board, you can import it from Trello.

I couldn't import the data. There may be something wrong with the formats, but Trello on the free plan only allows you to export data to json. PLANKA sees such a file and displays it in the interface, but when you click on **Create Board** , nothing happens. And if you specify a name, then just a blank board is created.

When creating a board for the first time, you will need to select the default mode for displaying cards: Kanban, grid, or list. Card type and other display and notification parameters.

### Like Trello, but not Trello

After that, all working with PLANKA is no different from any other Kanban tool. You create boards, lists, add cards to them, and move them back and forth.

I tried working with PLANKA for a while, and quickly enough I came to the conclusion that I don't understand how it works at all.

As I wrote above, it is basically a Kanban board, and you have all the basic and necessary tools for work. But during the work itself, various problems arise.

First of all, my Trello board did appear in the interface at some point, and I was able to work with it. At the same time, the ability to add new lists on any boards disappeared somewhere. And before that, on the contrary, I could not create new cards inside the lists.

---

I worked with the self-hosted version of PLANKA, which is a bit reduced in features compared to the paid cloud version. I also ran the whole thing on RPI 4, which is why I don't rule out that all my bugs came out due to weak hardware.

But, based on my experience with this service, I am not ready to recommend it for anything more than basic personal use. The code of the service is open, and with the help of direct hands or neural networks, all problems can be fixed and the service can be customized for yourself. But do you need to do this? I think not.
