How to Easily Run New and Retro Games on Linux

Lutris simplifies launching games on Linux by automating the installation of stores, libraries, and emulators for both modern and retro titles.

On Windows, even very old games rarely pose problems. But on Linux, every attempt to play can turn into hours of system configuration, images, virtual machines, and other not‑so‑interesting chores.

You can streamline the installation of modern or even retro games from a wide range of platforms with the Lutris application. Essentially, it’s a Steam‑style game launcher that automates the setup of all the software required to run a game.

When you first launch the launcher, you’ll find an empty game library. There are several ways to add games. The first is to install an app store: Steam, EA, GOG, Ubisoft, and many others.

When you select a store, Lutris automatically prompts you to download all the necessary dependent applications and installs them.

Once everything is ready, you can launch your favorite app store and install your games within it.

In a similar way, you can install any games outside of stores, which is especially useful for retro titles. To do this, start by adding a game to the list and choose the option that suits you:

  • Search for a pre‑configured set in the community database
  • Install a Windows game from an .exe file
  • Install from a script
  • Install a ROM

Regardless of the chosen method, Lutris will guide you through all the necessary installation steps and download any missing libraries and emulators. The installed game will then appear in the list, and you can start playing it with ease.
